Like many of the cities and towns in Massachusetts including Boston, Billerica is named after a town in England called Billericay, in Essex. Another familiar narrative it shares with surrounding cities (although unique in its details) is that in the early 1630s it was a Native American village - this one called Shawshin. Massachusetts Governor John Winthrop was granted this land in 1638, and after awhile it came to be settled formally in 1652, finally in 1655 it was incorporated into the town Billerica. The town still has a representative town meeting government comprised of about 240 members.
Most notably Billerica is best known as its motto stats: “America's Yankee Doodle Town”. This is memorialized in the song “Yankee Doodle”, which was actually a term of pride around the event of when native Thomas Ditson was tarred and feathered by the British while on a visit to Boston in 1775. An event that can't be missed in Billerica today is the “Yankee Doodle Weekend”, which is held every September and includes a town-wide celebration honoring the town's Revolutionary past with a parade, a Colonial encampment, and varies festivities for the whole family to enjoy.
Around 40,000 people reside in this historic city in Middlesex County, and they enjoy a thriving industrial and commercial business landscape. Such companies which are based in Billerica include: E Ink Corporation, Raytheon, GE Measurement and Control Solutions, Cabot Corporation, Avaya Inc., Pan Am Railways, and Seahorse Bioscience. These companies give Billerica a thriving economy with quality jobs and make this an important part of why Massachusetts is a leader in manufacturing and industry. Pan Am Railways is New England's largest railroad, Raytheon is a major American defense contractor with two large offices in Billerica, and Avaya Inc. is a privately held $8 Billion dollar global provider of business communications and is headquartered in town.
Besides the business aspects which have attracted people to reside in Billerica, there are other benefits the city brings, such as it being only 20 miles north of Boston and a short distance from Lowell to the north. Also, Billerica has a quality public education system with six elementary schools, two middle schools, and one high school. The Shawsheen Valley Technical High School is also a quality educational option for residence.
For residents and visitors to enjoy Billerica's beauty and capture the historic value it brings, they can see and enjoy places like: Abraham Jaquith House, Bennett Public Library, Billerica Town Common District, Billerica Mills Historic District, Dutton-Holden Homestead, Manning Manse, and sight-seeing at the Middlesex Canal. In addition they can enjoy the Country Club of Billerica and go golfing, or they can take the family to the Trampoline Park where they can rock climb, play on a battle beam, or have fun with some 3D dodgeball.
