Stoneham is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts. It is located nine miles, north of downtown Boston. Its population is roughly 21,347. It came to life in 1632 when, Governor Winthrop and his party came upon the area.
First settlement dates back to 1634 and the original settlers were Whigs. It remained a small town during the colonial era and its colonial history are still visible in Spot Pond Archeology District. It prospered during the industrial revolution as a major shoe-manufacturing center.
It is home to Olympic figure skating medalist, Nancy Ann Kerrigan. She was born in 1969 and started skating at the age of 6. She won her first competition at the age of 9 at the Boston Open. Stoneham houses the Stone Zoo. Itís a medium sized zoo which is operated by Zoo New England. It was founded in 1905 and began as a small collection of local animals which were soon to be regarded as exotic. One of its main attraction is the Kiddy zoo which was based on the Mother Goose stories, opened in the 1950ís. After its renovation, it started housing animals like elephants, sea lions, pygmy, hippos and other large mammals. In the 70ís and 80ís, it breed endangered species including orangutans, siamang to mention a few. In 1979, ďMajorĒ a polar bear was its main attraction.
A fascinating fact about Stoneham is that it hosts the one and only 11k road race in America during Veterans Day on the 11th of November. The race was established in 1999 so as to realize greater awareness of the military and to educate the youth on the significance of 11/11. The race is in honor, recognition and remembrance of the day. Another is that it featured in the Guinness World Book of Records in the 1970ís for having the maximum number of gas stations within a one mile strip.
